How to Auto Refresh Power BI Desktop
Refreshing data automatically in Power BI Desktop involves a few steps.
- Install Power BI Gateway:
- If you haven’t installed Power BI Gateway on your computer, download and install it from the official Microsoft website.
- Make sure to choose the option that matches your system requirements.
- Create a Data Source Connection:
- Open Power BI Desktop and go to the “Home” tab.
- Click on “Get Data” and choose the appropriate data source.
- Connect to your data source by providing the necessary credentials.
- Load the data into the Power BI Desktop workspace.
- Configure Data Source Settings:
- After loading the data, click on “Data Source Settings” under the “Home” tab.
- In the dialog box, select the data source you want to configure.
- Click on the “Options” button.
- Enable the “Allow Native Database Query” and “Enable Fast Combine” options if available.
- Click on “OK” to save the changes.
- Publish to Power BI Service:

- Click on “My Workspace” and then click on “Get” in the left navigation pane.

- Open the dataset you just uploaded.
- Schedule Refresh:
- In the dataset view, click on “Refresh” in the top menu.

- Choose the frequency and time for automatic refreshes, and set up any required credentials.
- Click on “Apply” to save the refresh settings.
