How to Add Secondary Axis in Power BI

Adding a secondary axis in Power BI allows you to plot two different measures with different scales on the same chart. This can be useful when comparing data that have different units or ranges. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Open your Power BI report and go to the page where you want to add the secondary axis.
  2. Select the chart you want to add the secondary axis to by clicking on it.
  3. In the “Visualizations” pane on the right side of the screen, go to the “Format” section.
  4. Expand the “Y-Axis” option by clicking on the arrow icon next to it.
  5. Toggle the switch next to “Secondary” to “On”.
  6. Your chart now has a secondary Y-axis. You can customize its format and scale by adjusting the options in the “Y-Axis” section.
  7. To add a measure to the secondary axis, click on the “Values” section in the “Visualizations” pane.
  8. Drag and drop the measure you want to add to the secondary axis into the “Secondary” field well.
  9. You can now see two different measures on the chart, each with its own axis.
  10. Customize the appearance of the secondary axis by adjusting its format, title, and other properties in the “Y-Axis” section.

For example, let’s say you have a line chart showing the sales revenue over time. You want to compare the sales revenue with the number of units sold. By adding a secondary axis, you can plot the sales revenue on the primary axis and the number of units sold on the secondary axis. This allows you to easily see the correlation between the two measures.
