How to Add Power BI Tab in Excel

Adding Power BI tab in Excel is a useful feature that allows you to integrate interactive Power BI reports and dashboards directly in Excel workbooks. This enables you to access and analyze real-time data using the powerful visualization capabilities of Power BI within the familiar Excel environment.

Step 1: Enable Power BI Add-in

The first step is to make sure that the Power BI add-in is enabled in Excel. Follow these steps:

  1. Open Excel and go to File -> Options.
  2. In the Options dialog box, click on Add-ins on the left-hand side.
  3. Next to Manage:, select COM Add-ins, and click on Go….
  4. In the Add-Ins dialog box, check the box next to Microsoft Power BI, and click on OK.
  5. The Power BI tab should now appear in the Excel ribbon.

Step 2: Insert Power BI Tab

Once the Power BI add-in is enabled, you can easily insert a Power BI tab in your Excel workbook:

  1. Click on the Power BI tab in the Excel ribbon.
  2. Click on the Power BI icon, and select Pin a Power BI tile.
  3. A Power BI Visualization pane will appear on the right-hand side.
  4. Sign in to your Power BI account or create a new one.
  5. Once signed in, you can select a Power BI report or dashboard to pin to your Excel workbook.
  6. Choose the desired visualization from the selected report or dashboard.
  7. Drag and drop the visualization onto the Excel worksheet at the desired location.
  8. Resize and format the visualization as needed.
  9. The Power BI tab is now added to your Excel workbook, and the visualization will be updated automatically when the underlying data changes in Power BI.

Example:

Let’s say you have a Power BI dashboard that shows sales performance by region. You can pin a specific chart from this dashboard to your Excel workbook to keep track of the latest sales figures:

  1. Insert the Power BI tab using the above steps.
  2. In the Power BI Visualization pane, select the desired chart for sales performance by region.
  3. Drag and drop the chart onto the Excel worksheet.
  4. Resize and format the chart as needed.

Now, whenever the sales data is updated in the Power BI dashboard, the chart in your Excel workbook will automatically reflect the changes.
