I would suggest using the basic relationship and a modified withCount():

public function ratings() {
    return $this->hasMany('App\Rating');
}

$reviews = Review::withCount(['ratings as average_rating' => function($query) {
    $query->select(DB::raw('coalesce(avg(rating),0)'));
}])->get();
