To get the latest event, you can override the render method of your plugin:

class YourCMSPlugIn(CMSPluginBase):
    model = Event
    ...

    def render(self, context, instance, placeholder):
        context.update({
            'latest_event': self.model.objects.all()[:1],
            'placeholder': placeholder
        })

        return context
